Ve spolupráci s blízkým přítelem Cyrilem M. Kornbluthem pokračoval i v 50. letech, kdy společně vytvořili jednu z nejpozoruhodnějších autorských dvojic v dějinách žánru. Jejich nejznámějším dílem se stal samozřejmě román Obchodníci s vesmírem (The Space Merchants). Příběh se stal vzorem pro desítky podobně koncipovaných titulů ze světa ovládaného mocenskými skupinami budoucnosti. Společná díla se nepřestala objevovat ještě čtyři roky po Kornbluthově předčasném úmrtí, Pohl navíc na počátku 70. let zpracoval několik Kornbluthových návrhů a výsledkem jeho snahy byla mimo jiné také oceněná povídka The Meeting (1972 – Hugo).
Stěžejní prací Pohlova samostatně napsaného díla se stal vřele přijatý román Gateway ke kterému později doplnil další tři pokračování (Za modrým horizontem událostí, Setkání s Heechee, Anály Heechee) a několik kratších prací. V průběhu svého života pokračoval v psaní za spolupráce s jinými autory (Jack Williamson, Lester del Rey a jiní) a publikoval pod mnoha pseudonymy (např. Paul Flehr, Ernst Mason či Charles Satterfield). Je autorem více jak třiceti románů, okolo šedesáti povídek a sestavil více jak dvacet antologií. Získal několik cen Hugo i Nebula a v roce 1993 obdržel titul Velmistr SF.
Frederik Pohl zůstal věrný čisté science fiction podporované bohatými znalostmi moderních věd, svým rozsáhlým dílem a záslužnou redakční činností do značné míry obohatil žánr, jenž mu může poděkovat i za jeho neustálý optimismus, převažující nad satirickou kritikou budoucí společnosti.
